This pretty little girl is Paige! She came from the largest Puppy Mill Operation raid in Tennessee’s history – 760 animals with close to 700 being dogs & puppies. Paige is around 7 years old and has more than likely lived at this Puppy Mill all her life. The dogs & puppies were kept in groups in elevated rabbit hutches. Paige is about 5-7 years old and is mostly blind. It seems she can sometimes see shadows. Paige is currently being fostered with Paloma and a few kitties. When the HSUS rescued her, they had to shave the majority of her hair because it was horribly matted and knotted. She’s now a peach-fuzzy ball of cuteness! It has been a bit of a challenge, but Paige certainly does have pluck and determination.
Once in her new foster home, it took Paige a few hours to settle and then she went exploring and getting the “lay of the land”. It was very interesting to watch her walk very slowly around the perimeter of the condo. We learned that she was “mapping” her whereabouts and, in a sense, counting her steps. The loss of sight in a dog is not the worst thing. The sense of smell is their most important sense, and her little snout works just fine. It has taken a while for Paige to relax, but she is finally beginning to act like a normal “dog” and have fun. She even barked the other day! Recently, she went to visit foster “cousins”, a rottie, a pit, and a big mutt (all big dogs), and she wanted to play with them all! Paige really enjoys being outside and soaking up some sun. It's great to feel the warmth and lounge in the grass. And, she's finally housetrained! She is slowly becoming affectionate. Sadly, the simplest things take time for Puppy Mill dogs. With patience, though, a Puppy Mill dog will transform before your very eyes. You can make that difference and help a poor, neglected dog become a shiny, happy little love with light in their eyes for the first time in their lives. Adopt our wonderful Paige and truly be a part of saving a life!
