If you see something in Joey's eyes that speak to your heart, please read his bio. This gentle and soulful dog has been waiting for his forever home for too long now. He's been bounced around quite a bit. Are you his last stop?
To foster Joey while he awaits his forever home or to adopt him, please complete an application.
If you have questions about fostering, please refer to our foster FAQ or contact .
Joey is a Labrador/Border Collie mix, approximately 7 - 8 years (we have a "Seniors for Seniors" program in which we offer a discounted adoption donation to anyone over the age of 50 who wants to adopt one of our senior cats or dogs) old. Joey is a bit shy and reserved with strangers at first which is typical of Border Collies. However, he wants nothing more than to bond with human companions, and once he gets over that hump the lucky recipient of Joey's love will have a faithful, gentle companion for life.
Joey's Personality
Joey is a moderately energetic dog. He loves to go out for long walks, but isn't terribly interested in playing ball. What he really loves is to roam, patrol, and run free - though in an enclosed environment with a high fence because sometimes the temptation to run and run is just too overwhelming for this otherwise well trained guy. If he's really feeling frisky, he'll run around in circles and then try to engage you in a wrestling match. But if that's not your thing, he understands a good stern "no" command.
What really makes Joey happiest is to be mellow around the house with the people he loves. You'll never be lonely with this guy around. If you're doing work in your office, expect him to saunter in and take a nap right at your feet. If you go to the kitchen to do the dishes expect him to follow shortly behind and sprawl out on the floor and nap near you while you do your thing. Same with watching TV and reading a book. And you can expect him to sleep at the foot of your bed too. The funny thing about Joey is that he needs to be by your side, but doesn't like to be crowded. He'll withstand your attempts to snuggle with him for a few moments, but as soon as he gets the chance he'll just set up shop on the floor close by instead. Still he loves to rubbed and scratched on his belly. If you get the right spot, he'll be writhing and kicking in ecstasy before you know it (which will often get him wound up for play time).
Joey is very well trained. He's been through three different obedience classes and knows most of the essential commands. Sit, stay, wait, heel, and high-five! He's great on a leash, and if he begins to pull a strong heel command, sometimes with a bit of a tug, has him right back by your side. And, of course, he's potty trained.
A trait found in Border Collies, Joey can be a barker - which is good in some situations. But if you don't want him barking, a strong and stern "OUT" command will get him to stop. His overall demeanor is one of incredible gentleness. He is great with kids and other dogs. He doesn't play much with his canine friends until he really gets to know them, but he is always happy and calmed in their presence. He will thrive in a home with other dogs, probably assuming the more submissive role. Commotion in the form of loud noises (firecrackers etc.) scare Joey immensely. This is typical of Border Collies as they have a high startle reflex.
Ideal Home
Joey, being part Border Collie, has it in him to be destructive if left alone. True to the Border Collie side of his nature, Joey is intelligent and mental stimulation is just as important as the physical. Supplying him with mentally challenging toys that have hidden treats will help feed his active mind. Also, teaching him new tricks, a game of hide-and-seek, obedience training refreshers, agility activites, or other creative ways to keep him occupied will help curb the Border Collie tendancy to get into trouble around the house. Joey needs an owner who is active and who will exercise him daily (long walks, jogs, etc.). Exercise is very important for Border Collies and Labradors. Joey is a mix of both so this important fact should not be overlooked. Exercise/activity is extremely important.
Joey's ideal home will have a yard (with a high fence) so that he can run around and play. Also, Joey would love regular play dates with his canine buddies. He may be mellow, but he does enjoy socializing.
The family that is able to provide the right conditions for Joey will be rewarded with one of the sweetest, most gentle dogs they will ever meet. He will forever lavish them with his love. One look into Joey's big sad brown eyes and you'll know how much soul he has and how much love he has to give. Honestly, you won't find a more gentler soul.
Joey's gentle nature probably can be attributed to him being part Labrador. The Labrador side of Joey is a good balance for the Border Collie in him. For more information on Labrador Retrievers and Border Collies please visit the following websites:
